Technology is a powerful tool that can support and transform education in many ways, from making it easier for teachers to create educational materials to allowing new ways for people to learn and work together. Technology can help students get more out of traditional teaching by giving them the opportunity to implement what they learn in class. This approach could, in theory, allow some students to base their understanding of the material on trial and error (i.e., technology has had a significant effect on education). It now plays an integral role in all aspects of this industry.
Educational technology can help students by making learning more engaging and collaborative. Instead of memorizing facts, students learn by doing and through critical thinking. This could be as simple as answering an interactive questionnaire in class or participating in group discussions with technology. Or it could be as complicated as playing educational games, practicing scientific experiments in a virtual lab, or going on a virtual field trip.
A very important technological impact on education is the increase in interactivity and participation in class. In addition, better general understanding, practical learning, time management, and combined learning methodologies are just some of the impacts that technology has had on student learning. The World Bank supports countries in their attempt to strengthen and expand existing educational practices and approaches through the use of new technologies, as well as to transform them. Countries must have flexible and scalable systems that avoid data silos that do not communicate with each other and the retention of providers (where future decisions on the use of educational technology are limited by technological choices made in the past).
And this is especially important after students have become accustomed to learning with technology during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since good technology is generally about supplementing or amplifying what educators and students are already doing, it's almost always a mistake to order programs from above. Technology makes it easier for students to transition from sitting mindfully and listening to more hands-on learning. In addition, the use of technology can completely eliminate many different problems; for example, when students can access their assignments online, they no longer need to be photocopied or stapled.
This use of technology could help students master basic skills and get more out of education. However, it must be borne in mind that technology is a tool for education, but it cannot solve problems on its own. Teachers' use of technology will allow them to take advantage of a variety of resources to provide more focused and personalized learning to students. When teachers lack pedagogical content or knowledge, technology can support structured lesson plans or text-based pushes to develop this capacity.
There is no single “educational technology” initiative that achieves the same results everywhere, simply because school systems differ in terms of students and educators, as well as in the availability and quality of materials and technologies. Consider how the introduction of technology can affect interactions between students, educators, and content. Understanding the basic infrastructure and regulatory limitations for the use of educational technology is a necessary first step. However, if used intentionally, educational technology can go from being a distraction to an effective teaching tool with positive effects on student performance.
